I used to think I had to wait until I had more time and money to do the things I wanted. Like get my coaching certification, launch my business, or travel outside the country.
If the conditions were right, then I could chase those dreams.
Then I realized my lack of action had nothing to do with waiting for the right conditions. It was fear that was holding me back. A fear of failing. A fear of what other people would think. A fear of change and the discomfort it often brings.
Recognizing the fear allowed me to face it and challenge my perspective. The perspective of: What if I never try? What if I got to the end of my life and regretted never really living it?
What if there was an exceptional, full life waiting for me beyond the comfortable life I was holding onto so tightly?
It wasn't until the fear of missing out on those dreams became greater than the fear of trying them that I took action.
I often ask my clients, “What is it costing you?” because it helps them recognize that the risk of going after what they want is often smaller than the cost of never trying. Reflecting on that question can be powerful.
Here are a few examples to consider:
The cost of not taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health could be: future illness, shorter lifespan, passing along negative habits to your children, or not being around to meet your grandchildren.
The cost of staying in a job you hate could be: resentment towards others, less patience with your children, missing out on memories with your kids, high levels of stress, less financial freedom, less fulfillment and joy, unhealthy coping mechanisms, or a strain on your relationships.
Yes, things might not work out the way you plan. You might face disappointment and failure, but think about what you could be sacrificing by never even trying. Consider what could be waiting for you on the other side of your fear. Beyond your comfort zone.
What are fear and comfort costing you? What if you never even try?
The truth is there will never be a right time. So stop waiting.
